Communicable Diseases
Communicable Disease Services
A vital role of the Texas County Health Department is to identify, prevent and control the spread of infectious disease. With the assistance of the Missouri Department on Health and Senior Services, physicians, hospitals, schools, laboratories and others this role is carried out. Active and passive surveillance is collected that indicate what diseases are present in the county and can be compared to past years to determine what is considered normal. Active surveillance is information collected by the Health Department once a week from sites around the county that represent different age groups. Passive surveillance is information received from mandated reporters of selected infectious diseases from physicians, hospitals, laboratories and schools. When a communicable disease is reported the Health Department does an investigation to identify the source of the infection, any contacts who might need preventative treatment or testing. Education is provided to those involved and if indicated to the community also.
